Ethics, Labor, and Usury in the Protestant Reformation: A Comparative Study of the Economic and Social Thought of Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli

Abstract
This article analyzes the economic and social thought of the main Protestant Reformers of the sixteenth century. Although they did not develop a formal economic theory, their doctrines offered normative principles on labor, property, wealth, taxation, and the role of the State. From their respective traditions, Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli expressed a moral critique of profit, accumulation, and usurious practices, while defending the role of civil power in promoting the common good. In this context, Weber's hypothesis linking Protestantism with the rise of capitalism is critically revisited, showing that the Reformers articulated a moral economy rather than a justification of the market. Through the analysis of primary sources and recent scholarship, the article proposes a reinterpretation of the Protestant legacy as a theory of value rooted in Christian ethics and social justice.
