Abstract
The confrontation between the liberals and conservatives in Spain slowly originated with the Constitution of the Cortes of Cadiz. That time the Church was aligned with the conservatives against the liberal thinkers whose loyalty to the king and reverence to religion were declining. Most Spanish bishops and the Roman Curia interpreted the Constitution of 1812 negatively during the liberal triennium while the liberal bishops made a positive stance with it but the latter were forced to resign. In this context, this study focuses on the character named Antonio Posada Rubin de Celis, an appointed Bishop of Cartagena in 1821, who was also forced to resign when he supported the liberal regime. The analysis of his writings during his ecclesiastical career shows that some of documents focused on the analysis of the charges and punishment suffered by the bishop himself, the restoration of absolutism, and a conclusion containing a brief information on his exile and the his subsequent restoration.
