Abstract
Abstract: A fundamental subject of the policy of the first monarch of the House of Bourbon in Spain was its relations with the Holy See, characterized by their disputes, break ups and fragile agreements. One consequence of this political-religious issue was the creation of the ‘Comisiones de Archivos’, promoted by Fernando VI and directed by José de Carvajal, aimed at collecting instruments to legitimize the claims of patronage of the Crown. This study’s aim is to rescue from oblivion the existence of such commissions exposing the compilation of original relevant documents of papal and historical significance such as files and reports, or manuscripts and charters recovered by the commissioners, particularly in relation to the review of ecclesiastical and municipal archives located in the bishopric of Cartagena.
