Vatican II: A Council for the 20th Century

Resumen

El artículo trata de ofrecer el legado eclesiológico del Vaticano II. Según Congar
la característica general del Concilio es que «por primera vez en su historia secular,
la Iglesia se definió a sí misma (o, en todo caso, ella se describió) en la constitución
dogmática Lumen gentium y en otras constituciones, decretos o declaraciones». La
Iglesia fue un tema predominante en aquellos cuatro otoños conciliares que transcurrieron
entre 1962 y 1965. Ahora bien, la idea de Iglesia y de su misión ha de buscarse
en la constitución dogmática sobre la Iglesia y en el resto de los documentos.
Se presenta una visión general del Concilio, y se hace recurriendo principalmente a
los relatos de dos laicos que estuvieron allí, dos testigos de excepción: Jean Guitton,
el primer y único observador laico en el Vaticano II durante el primer período de
sesiones, y Pilar Bellosillo, auditora laica presente en el Concilio desde el tercer
período de sesiones.

Abstract: The article tries to offer the ecclesiological of the Vatican II. According Y. Congar
the general characteristic of the Council is that “for the first time in its secular
history, the Church defined itself (or, in any case, she described herself) in the Dogmatic
Constitution Lumen Gentium and other constitutions, decrees and declarations”.
The Church was the dominant theme in these four conciliar periods that runs
between 1962 and 1965. Now, the idea of the Church and its mission is to be sought
in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church and the rest of the documents. We present
an overview of the Council, using mainly the stories of two layperson who were
there present, two exceptional witnesses namely: Jean Guitton, the first and the only
lay observer at the Vatican II during the first session, and Pilar Bellosillo, a lay auditor
present at the Council during the third session.
